Artist statement

In my daily life, I am continuously aware of my environment. By collecting materials and single-use packaging I challenge myself to revalue things that (in our society today) are labelled as unusable waste. There is
a contradiction between the durability of packaging material and the volatile use for which we use them / the short-term on which we depreciate such materials.
Similar to my search for materials I get the inspiration for my use of colour from my immediate environment. By looking and analysing I register colour combinations, which I later recreate within my practice.
In addition to literally recuperating shapes, colours and found materials from an existing context, I also question their existence. This concrete search has emphasized my concern about the current consumption behaviour. I collect and analyse the aesthetic value of single use packaging. Starting from things that already exist/ objets trouvées I explore whether and what to add to refine the given object. By modifying and colouring I discard these found objects from their original function
in order to improve the value of these disposable materials and extend their life expectancy.
Given the sculptural potential of the mate- rials I use, my work also has a sculptural character. Therefore the repositioning of my works within a physical space is (also) an important part of my process.

Marianne Borremans

Marianne's artistic practice parallels her critical attitude towards nowadays consumerism. Her personal confrontation with disposable packaging is not expressed in frustration, but rather in a plastic search for repurposing such materials within her practice. By assembling, colouring or scaling found objects, she discovers new possibilities to create beautiful works of art from often modular witnesses of our factory-driven economy. Although Marianne mainly uses paint and colour to modify her found objects, she no longer commits to the classical use of painting as a medium despite her academic education.
