Samuel Vanderveken studied graphic design and painting in Ghent and Nottingham (UK). From 2009 to 2012, he was the driving force behind the artistic non-profit organisation Opa Malyn in Mechelen. After a one-year residency in Leipzig (Germany), he moved to Brussels where he currently lives and works. Vanderveken has exhibited his work at, amongst others, De Garage (Mechelen), Kusseneers Gallery (Brussels), Het Paviljoen (Ghent), Westpol Air Space (Leipzig) and S.M.A.K. (Ghent).

Samuel Vanderveken's artistic practice doesn't involve the obvious and repetitive use of the same technique on ever changing subjects, and he doesn't aim to make recognisable work. What the artist is seeking, instead, is an intense and profound understanding of the medium of painting, without nourishing the illusion of a final goal. His focus is more upon the journey itself and the energy of semper excelsius always aiming higher . This constant endeavour and profound self-questioning bring meaning to an otherwise absurd and predetermined existence: two concepts that are essential in his work. For all its visual diversity, Samuel Vanderveken's oeuvre has a consistent message, one that is inspired by the ideas of Camus, Kafka, the world of cartoons and Taoist philosophy.

This is expressed in surprising tableaux, be they figurative or abstract, in which anything seems possible. Filled with a riot of colours and shapes, they might be pleasantly chaotic or betray just a hint of madness. The images are derived from experiments that evolve into an idea, or vice versa, almost as though the artist has reached a crossroads and can go in any direction.
